April 20, 2008

Now that we’ve got the photos of Dans presentation and celebrations of his inter-transfer victory out of the way, we can get beck to the mundane business of finishing out the very last few weeks of this season. This is the fourth last week, and the jostling for positions is as intense as ever.

The Magicians again managed to pull something out of the bag this week. With all his players back playing again, goals from Santa Cruz, Agbonglahor, and Petrov … and a clean sheet from Pepe Reine, on 37 points, they were the only team in the thirties this week. Sixty points ahead, three games left, he’s beginning to finally feel assured of the ultimate glory for the season. The Eagles slipped up this week only managing an average score of 22 points, but they maintain their sixty point lead over the Hammers in third place.

Most teams scored around the 20 points for the week, but Shaybee used the opportunity to move into fourth place and into the money at the expense of Pat Murphys team of inexperienced boys (Alan Hansen said of them “You’ll never win anything with kids” … how right he was …. ;) ) The Hammers were not looking too convincing this weekend and now see themselves with only 16 points to spare over fourth place. there’s nothing in it there.

Dermot and Máiréad both played out a stalemate this weekend with sixteen points a piece. Don gave up another four points to Sonya this weekend. (do that for the next three weeks and she’ll scrape past him by a single point!

The Vultures recent surge to life ground to a halt this weekend scoring only 11 points, and putting his hopes of catching Dermot Mc’s lads in jeopardy. Thirty points in three weeks, it’s still possible, though Dermot Mc may be looking at trying to catch Mairead who is 40 points ahead.

The last Inter-Transfer competition is hotting up as it also comes to an end with only two points separating the Eagles, Magicians and Hammers on top of the table. It’s going to be a doing dong battle for the last piece of silverware for the season.

update 21-Apr: Lots of assists came in on the scores today. I’ve updated the tables below.

April 14, 2008

It was a big weekend for the teams on top of the table. Man United look odds on now to collect their second league title in a row., thought there’s one game left before the final scores for the week can be counted. Wigan V Chelsea tonight really should see the Chelsea players pick up a few more points, but there’s not too many Chelsea or Wigan players left on peoples teams.

Updated 11pm 14-Apr: WHHOOOOOO  HOOOOOOOOOO! Chelsea only drew tonight and have virtually handed the league title to United. Now that I’ve gotten that little rant off my back, I can get back to business here. The magicians like United are holding their own on top of the table. Now only 4 games left and 47 points ahead, it’s looking more and more likely as the weeks pass that it’s all done and dusted at this stage.

Similarly the Eagles and the Hammers XI have strengthened their positions in second and third. It looks at this stage that unless there’s a momentous change of fortunes for some of the other teams, Pat ‘daddy’ Murphy and Shay Byrne are going to battle it out for the last paying spot of fourth place.

One time leaders -the Deadlies have now slumped to seventh position, mainly due to his lack of one Christiano Ronaldo, but what’s worse for his point of view is that he has lost another 12 points to Sonya and he’s now got only 15 points of breathing space now. Likewise Dermot lost 5 points to Mairead, and is now only 12 ahead of her. 4 weeks of nerves ahead for some, but it’s at the end when the cream really comes to the top.

Player of the week has to be Garth Barry. Nineteen points for Sonya and Ola, which really pushed them to the head of the weeks scorers.

The magicians have passed the thousand point mark, now only 55 points ahead of the Eagles in second who are in turn fifty nine points ahead of third. With only five games remaining, those top positions appear secure, but there’s lots of fun in the chasing pack. Hammers XI who have been floundering in mid-table all season have made a break for it this week, leap-frogging three teams and tentatively holding third position. But with three teams within 21 points of him, he’s got a lot to worry about. The real truth will come at the very end of the season and the final positions are revealed.

Update: Portsmouth 1 – 0 West Ham. The Eagles gained some more ground on the Magicians on top. It’s down to 45 points with five games to go now. It was 80 points a few weeks ago. I’m getting a little worried now. This was never in the script!

There are some other interesting inter spouse tussles going on at the moment. Don has been falling and is now only 17 points ahead of Sonya,  while Dermot and Mairead have been tooing and frowing all season and there is again only 17 points between them.

After two weeks since the last match because of the FA Cup last weekend and Champions league games, our teams were back in action over the weekend.

Dan has hand another storming week, and looks like passing out a bunch of players in the coming weeks unless his team collapses which really does not look like happening. He’s odds on for the third inter-transfer title, being 26 points ahead of his nearest challenger and 40 or so points ahead of third. His good form is a testament to his bravery with an “all-or-nothing” transfer policy, changing 7 players in one clean sweep, and leaving him with none for the final transfer window. His weekly total of 55 points came mostly from a Torres hat-trick, a brace from Ronaldo, and a goal and clean sheet from Everton defender Lescott.

The hammers also made a bit move as well, scoring a very commendable 47 points, and climbing 2 places in what still is a fierce mid-table battle.

A relatively poor showing by the Deadlies sees him loose second place to the Eagles, and are now finding themselves being slowly sucked into the middle of the table into where many a former leader has disappeared this season.

The Eagles are showing good consistent form, and have finally began to grab a hold onto second place, but will still have to look over their shoulders at the chasing pack. 11 matches to go, and anybody could finish up there yet.

On top however, one wonders if the Magicians are ever going to have a disaster week and get caught by the pack. Now 76 points ahead which is a full two weeks of good scoring  in front. Nothing  is going wrong for them, except maybe for Martin Petrov’s sending off last night for stupidly kicking out in frustration at the end of the game.

For me however the most interesting thing is that only 40 points separate third to tenth, and what happens in there is a real lottery, and to be honest good luck to each and every one of them because they’ll need it.

One final thing though is that i’m not sure when the last game of the current transfer window is. There is no week coming up where there is a full week without games. Two options really: 1)  All transfers in by Saturday March 22nd 12pm (8/9 games left for teams), or 2) Saturday March 15th 12pm (9/10 games left for teams). Personally, I would go for March 15th but for no particular reason at all. Tell me what ye want, cos it’s late in the day for me to be thinking about this now. January 2, 2008
  • There have been lots of goals this week with Martin Laursen,Benni McCarthy,Elano,Carlos Tevez,John Utaka and Emmanuel Adebayor all finding the net, and with a number of teams claiming sheets (ManU, Arsenal,Portsmouth,Everton, Man City,Blackburn), points for this set of New Years games have been among the highest in a number of weeks.
  • Top man this week was Shay with 53 points. Three goals, three assists, four clean sheets and a few yellow cards saw him put up this big total. So like a football dropped from a height, he’s on the bounce back up the table, picking up two places this week, and lots more in his sights if they’re not careful.
  • The Vultures have produced an astonishing display with 51 points this week and have moved off the bottom of the table, and only another sixteen points will see them move up two further places! Little did he think on Christmas morning as he scaled Mushera that he would be in such a position just a week later. But now can they choose wisely for this transfer window, and put his dark days behind him?
  • The Magicians have pulled away from the challengers this week, gaining ground on their nearest six challengers, and it very much looks like they have sown up the second inter-transfer window. Their first trophy in Fantasy Football history, all thanks to a sparkling turnaround since the last transfer window.
  • The Deadlies see the lead slip further from their grasp again this week, losing a further 21 points on the leader. Injuries and non-selection continue to blight his defense and midfield. He would probably still be on top otherwise, as it has been a problem for the last six weeks
  • Shaybee is showing resurgent form again, and is beginning to climb up the table again
  • Ola produced a strong display and has moved from a position of barely holding onto fifth to challenging for fourth.
  • Pat Murphy is not out of it yet, but will have to do some serious shopping in this transfer window.
  • Pat and his current nemesis Sonya, have been having a ding-dong battle over Christmas, exchanging third position a number of times. But Sonya has not challenged this week, and will have to mind her back in case she slips down a notch.
  • The two Dermots have settled on the middle ground for this week, continuing their similar form of recent weeks. Much is expected of each of these up and coming managers.
  • Mairead had a good week, only to see the teams just above her do even better! But, she’s not far off that big bunch in the middle of the pack. She has a little work to do.
  • An awful big gap of sixty points has opened up between tenth and eleventh position in the table. Any of the four teams below that line will find it very difficult to bridge that gap.
  • It’s the end of the current Inter-Transfer competition, so therefore you will be able to exchange your players over the next 9 days (until the matches on the 12th Jan). I will post details on the transfer details in due course (tomorrow if i have time).
  • Oh … and a very Happy New Year to everyone :)

December 23, 2007

Christmas is upon us and the goose is getting fat. And so it is with Don’s Deadlies again this week for the second week in a row. They have created some more daylight between them and the chasing pack. A brace from Anelka, a strike from Tim Cahill, and a couple of assists from Fabregas supplied him most of his total.  I wonder if he’s going to start running away with things now, but the same players that have propelled him upwards at the moment, were dragging him down the table earlier. All their manager has to say for himself is that “What a nice surprise!”.

Now, as I keep saying, there’s a long way to go … especially over the Christmas period. Three sets of games to go in the next week. There will be lots of twists and turns in  those short days.

It was a horrible weekend for defences. Only Chelsea getting a clean sheet. There’s not many Chelsea defenders on peoples teams since most have shipped out Carvalho in the last two weeks. Maybe it looks like a not so smart move at the moment if Man Utd keep defending the way they are at the moment.

But there has been very little in it this weekend. There’s nothing to separate the crowd in the middle of the table, and not very exciting fare to be honest. I have a feeling however that there will be some some real movers and shakers over the Christmas period.

Anyway for now, a very happy and peaceful Christmas to one and all.

Another weekend of big changes. Long time leader Pat Murphy has fallen two places from the top into third. The Magicians have stayed firmly in second position, but team of the week by a proverbial mile are Don’t Deadlies, who have jumped from third into top spot, after what was a fantastic week for him. A hat-trick from Santa Cruz (I was wondering when he would score again), five assists, three clean sheets saw him cruise in with 48 points for the week. This even though his Blackburn defender left in five and got booked, he still had time to have a hand in two of Santa Cruz’s goals which meant that he came out on par for the day. This is the kind of luck you need sometimes. Indeed it was after the Saturday games that the table reshuffle happened, but the Deadlies extended their lead by a few more points on Sunday … just for good measure.

Even though the Magicians were second best of the week with 40 points (thanks again to Santa Cruz), they still find themselves now seven points adrift of the summit. They now are wondering if they will ever reach that top spot … but thoughts of turning to the Guinness make them think that “good things come to those that wait”.

Pat Murphy too has Santa Cruz, he also had Cesc return from injury and chip in a few points, and had clean sheets from Clichy and Evra, but his team really did poorly otherwise. He’s not out of it by any means, but it is a continuing slide which can only be arrested by a major injection of new blood.

Sonya’s lads are back on form with, 31 points from this Sunday afternoons two games thanks to a goal from Gallas and three clean sheets. Back up to fourth, looking more comfortable and maybe looking like they’re emerging from their few weeks of misery. They’re far from out of the race yet.

Der Golden was heard to say on Saturday evening that he’s looking like he’s going to wrap up the league yet after his good form that afternoon. He’ll have to do a little better than that though. Good is sometimes just not good enough! We all know he has it in him, and there are a lot of games from now to the end of the season. We will see what happens.

I think DJ has has definitely had his purpe patch. A few weeks ago he was looking dangerous as he charged for the top, but now just ten points less and he’ll drop another four places to tenth, cos he’s bunched up in the middle of the table with Mairead, Der Mc, Shaybee and Ola.

Arsenal v Chelsea , Liverpool v Man Utd

All change again tonight after the final four games of the weekend were played. Pat Murphy, ravaged by injuries had lost his position on top of the leader-board overnight, but has managed to scrape back into the lead thanks in main to a clean sheet and assist from George McCarthy of West Ham. Don’s Deadlies too who had been twenty points off the lead last night has bounced up today with goals and assists from Downing and Anelka, putting him right back in the thick of things. So again we have only five points separating the top three teams, BUT… the teams directly behind are catching up at a ferocious rate. Hammers XI and Dermot G are laying down their markers now. Up 3 and 4 places respectively on the week, they are really making themselves heard. Rosicky’s consolation in the dying seconds for Arsenal was enough to push Dermot up two place in the leaderboard. DermotMc had an average week by his own high standards, but only ten points will see him move up four places also. Only 20 points behind the front runners, these challenging teams mean that it is all up in the air again.

You know, it’s like the Tour de France. There was an early breakaway group, who have dropped weaker riders from the group, and have gained some others form the chasing pack. But, things are getting serious now, and the peleton are making a concerted effort to close things up and leave it for a sprint finish … but we’re not even half way there yet.

But of course, for what goes up, something else must also come down at the same time, so there’s disappointment this week for Sonya, Shay, Dermot Mc, Ola and Dan, who all find themselves slipping slightly down the food chain this week.

It’s amazing to watch the table chopping and changing so often, it makes it fascinating. As the old Chinese proverb states “May we live in interesting times”

I mentioned a good few weeks back how all the Golden clan were grouped near the bottom of the table, and it was a sorry sight for a family that are sporting mad. Indeed those comments now seem like a red rag to a bull, as they now cover the top five places in the weekly table, and are gaining momentum to climb the main leaderboard. Now before Mairead says that she wasn’t down in that mess early on, well neither was she a Golden at that stage either! and as for the Vultures, well their bellies are fat, and they have lost interest in going on!

Late news that Leigton Baines  (Pat Murphy) is out for the next six weeks with a torn hamstring. His team now have more injuries than the Arsenal. Troubled times for the current leader.
